JIGAWA STATE OF NIGERIA
GIRLS COLLEGE, KAZAURE
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

BACKGROUND
FOUNDATION YEAR:
The college was established in 1973 and opened on October 13, 1973. In its first year the college consisted of seventy two (72) students and four (4) teaching staff.
LOCATION:
The college was originally cited by the river in Kazaure town, on the site used by Kudu Primary School. In 1975, the college moved to a temporary site in the present compound. The permanent site is located approximately four (4) kilometers west of Kazaure town and one kilometer off the main Kano-Daura road. The permanent site is approximately 200 acres.
In stages, the school moved to the present permanent site and by September 1982, staff and students were occupying all completed buildings. These included the administration block, dining hall, kitchen, one special classroom block, home economics lab, four (4) classrooms block and twenty three (23) staff houses. The twelve (12) houses on the old site continued to be occupied by non-academic and some academic staff. By 1983, two more dormitories were handed over. Since 1982, the college has continued to use the accommodation on the temporary site.
These include laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology and two classroom blocks and nine (9) intermediate staff house and boys quarters. The Principal and Vice Principal are also accommodated in houses at the time the temporary site was constructed.
Presently the college has a total number of six hostels, with addition of five laboratories, English lab, Language lab, Skill Acquisition Center and Business Studies Lab. Now the college has an ICT Center where computer training is taking place for students. There are thirty six (36) classroom buildings.
SOURCE OF WATER:
When the college moved into the temporary building on the permanent site, there was pipe borne water to the dormitories and staff quarters. However, this has yet to be connected to any of the new permanent buildings on the site. To compensate, in January 1986, a borehole and 500 gallon storage tank was completed and in December 1986, a 20,000 gallon storage tank connected to the town water supply was completed for use by the students. The college continues to have its water distributed by tanker to the main kitchen and dining room, and the staff quarters.
Now the college depends solely on borehole, because pipe borne water is no longer available.
ELECTRICITY:
Electricity was first supplied to the compound in December 1977 when college generator was commissioned. In 1978 the college was connected to the rural electricity board (REB), generators which supplied power to Kazaure town and finally in 1981, the college was connected to NEPA when a link via Kano was made to Kazaure and Dambatta.
Presently the source of power is generator because the power source from NEPA cannot be relied upon.
STUDENTS POPULATION:
The college has continued to grow from its small beginning in 1973. This is reflected in the college hostels. At first there were only three houses, Amina, Emotan and Moremi. Kazaure house was established in 1975 and the last two houses, Kuti and Tinubu were established in 1982. The present students’ population is Nine Hundred and Twenty (920).
STAFF STRENGTH:
The total number of staff in the college is One Hundred and Forty-Two (142) as at February 2012, made up of Academic staff Fifty-Five (55) and Non-Academic Eighty-Two (82).
